GoPro Underwater Dive Housing Filter??

Did you know there was such a thing? I didn’t but sure am glad I do now. Wonder what this GoPro dive housing filter is for? Let me try to explain.

You can use these filter to correct exposure issues with the GoPro underwater and also create some pretty cool special effects with the small filters available on the market. There are several different dive housing filters on the market but two of the most popular filters are the red and polarized filters. Both are fairly cheap and worth buying if you use the camera for a fair amount of underwater video.

Red GoPro Filter: The red filter was designed to improve the auto white balance. The red filter will also help improve the vibrant underwater colors especially near coral reefs. The red filter helps cut down on the blue tone you get when shooting underwater video with the camera.

Polarizer Filter:  The Polarizer filter will obviously reduce glare and also at the same time help with above water saturation color of object in focus. This filter would work great if you shoot or take a lot of videos when it is really sunny out or if you are shooting video or using the camera to take pictures near water. I have used the polarizer filter for a few trips to the mountain snowboarding and have had good luck with the glare being knocked down from the snow with this small filter in the housing.

Installing either the Red filter of the Polarizer filter is actually very straight forward. It does however require one semi special tool. The tool is a T6 star bit screwdriver. You can get the T6 bit or T6 screwdriver at any local hardware store most will stock it. Once you have the right tool the job is quite easy. There are 10 screws that go around the lens. All that is needed it to remove the ten screws and pop the filter into the GoPro’s housing. Most of the newer filters are made for the dive housing or hero 3 housing.

In the last few months multiple companies have started to sell these small filters. Most companies that sell them are reputable I have heard of some knock off filters that have been going around especially in some of the dive forums. A lot of people who scuba dive use these filters to help improve their footage. Just make sure the company you buy the filter or filters from offer a good warranty and are reputable.  Check for on line reviews of the GoPro filters and even the better business bureau before you make a purchase.

Making A GoPro Battery Last Longer

GoPro Hero batteries do not last long enough. If you are a Videographer or just use the goprohd for fun, you have most likely ran out of battery at some point during the day or shoot.

Download GoPro Tips & Tricks Ebook!

GoPro says the Hero 2 and  Hero 3 have a battery life of 2.5 hours. That’s continuous recording in average temps of around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are looking to get a little more life out of the camera you can purchase the battery back pack for around $40. I don’t know about you but after shelling out $400 for the new hero 3 I’m not trying to shell out another $5 $10 or $40 dollars.

Do you use the LCD backpack on the back of your hero 2 or hero 3? I do and the battery life is absolutely horrible. With the hero 3 and LCD back pack paired I get around 90 minutes of recording. I did use the camera this weekend in 40 degree temps and the battery lasted roughly 65 minutes. That is with leaving the camera in standby mode and not turning it off after every time I used it for video.

A couple things I’ve noticed to get my GoPro Hero 3’s battery to last longer:

1. Use a wall charger.

Using a wall charger will give the cameras battery a way better charge and the charge will last longer actually I’ve noticed with some of my test about 30% longer.

2. Charge the battery with a car charger.

I have noticed If I use the car charge the battery will last longer then if I charged with the usb cord. I’m not exactly sure why but the USB cord does not give the battery a very solid charge.

3. Charging the battery when it is “Empty” will also get you a stronger and longer lasting battery life.

I normally try to charge the battery only after it dies. There are times however I have charged it from a half or quarter charge. If I have somewhere to be or forgot the night before, I’ll throw it on the car charger until fully charged.

4. make sure you have downloaded the latest firmware. GoPro will often release updates to their firmware. Often times this can be and has been related to battery life issues. I always update my cameras to the manufactures latest firmware updates you should to especially if you want the camera to operate to its full capability.

5.If the battery has been cycled a few hundred times I will replace it. I use my goprohd a lot. Well 2 to 3 times a week and even twice some weekends. I constantly have a GoPro battery on the car or wall charger. If I know the battery has been charged over a hundred times I start thinking about replacement. I only OEM battery direcctly from GoPro to ensure my camera last the longest and doesn’t get damaged from Chinese made part.

GoProHD Wifi Backpack & Remote Thoughts

If you have a goprohd, then you most likely have seen the Wifi Backpack and Remote kit that is out for use with the hero cameras. The combo kit comes in at $80 dollars which is kinda of expensive. If you have the extra money laying around and it’s burning a hole in your pocket, then purchase the kit. If you do not have the money and want another accessory then look or wait for something else. We recently purchased the hero 3 so we decided to get the wifi backpack and remote kit.

Below is a picture of everything that comes with the Hero 2 and hero 3 Wifi backpack kit.

If you are really into making videos and don’t want to have to touch the camera to start taking video or to snap a still photo then this may be for you.  The Wifi backpack kit is not only a connivence but it also can enhance your safety. You don’t wan’t to try and press the on button then the record button at the same time your bombing down a black diamond run at your favorite ski resort do you? I didn’t think so. Having the wifi remote strapped to your wrist is a heck of a lot more convenient.

Once of the cons about the goprohd wifi backpack is that it needs updated as soon as it’s opened. If you have done any research on this issue then you will see that there are many other hero 3 and hero 2 users that have had a lot of issues updating the camera. I just did the update several days ago and luckily for me it went smooth and I’m up to date now. Phew.

Another con is now instead of just one thing to charge you will have three. Now for some this might not be an issue. For me its a hug down fall and If I had thought about this it may have even been a purchasing factor. I didn’t even think about having to charge the camera, remote, and backpack, while I hurried down to the local tech store to buy the kit. Well I have it and after using it several times its a minor issue for the convenience of having the wifi kit on hand.

A pro is that this kit will enable you to start recording or you can take a still picture without having to touch the camera. If you use the goprohd to make videos this is kinda a big deal. Not touching the camera prevents any shaking which can cause the video to be shaky obviously but it will also cause the still picture to be distorted.I really like the connivence of the wifi backpack kit and would highly recommend getting it if you ate thinking about it. The pros far out weigh the cons with this particular accessory.

One issue I did find lacking is the remotes wireless distance. Especially if you are using the waterproof housing or dive housing. On several occasions I thought the camera was recording but to only find out later it never started. I wasn’t very happy needless to say and lost what I thought was some decent footage of some downhill mountain biking.  You would think from the handlebars to the camera on your head it wouldn’t be a big deal but in my case this has happened several times.

Would I recommend the goprohd wifi backpack kit? Personally if you have the extra cash laying around then yes. I like being able to get myself into a still picture if needs not suing the timed function and to also be able to use the camera to get only the video I want. Being able to turn the camera on when needed saves a lot of editing time and allows me to capture only the frames I want. So between the safety of being able to turn the gorprohd camera on without touching it and the extra battery life for me this is a hero 2 or her0 3 must.

It’s getting to be that time of year where the goprohd camera only comes out for fishing or hiking outdoor activities. During the off season all we can do is google and watch gopro bike videos on YouTube and Vimeo.

Until then we are stuck watching old clips and new ones of friends that have just got around to putting there day into a video for us to watch. Below is a link to one of the sickest gopro bike videos on the net. I just wanted to share this with everyone so you guys out their jonesing to ride can jones even

GoPro Bike Video Downhill

I like watching videos on YoTube but it seems like Vimeo is where some of the most talented videographers upload there videos. A lot has to do with the music you can use and also the underground atmosphere is has about it. I hope you enjoyed the video above I thought it was edited really well.

All you really need to get really great gopro bike video is have a decent mount for your camera. The goprohd hero bike mounting clamp will handle just about anything you can throw at it. It is a small but versatile mount that can be used for many other applications besides a downhill mountian bike video.

With the above mount you can get some very cool angles. You can use the gopro bike mount on the frame on the handle bar or on the seat post. Whatever angle you need you can probably get it with this very simple and fairly cheap gopro mount. I have this same mount and use it on my snowmobile and also on my fishing rod to get some short filler video for what ever kind of video I’m making at the time.

Homemade GoPro Pole Using Carbon Fiber Tubing

I wanted everyone to see the go pro pole I built using carbon fiber. This is probably one of the most versatile gopro poles that I use. I use this to get shots out of moving cars, out of boats, and stomping up and down river banks.

Download GoPro Tips & Tricks Ebook!

You can purchase carbon fiber tubbing on line for fairly cheap. Cutting it is simple all you need is a saw it really doesn’t have to be a special one any one will do. You need to determine how you will be using the gopro pole. If you will be using it in a close range situation, a shorter pole will work best. Need to get close up but from a distance? Then make it a bit longer. I have several different sizes that I use. The first and most common one that goes out the door with me is this one it’s approximately 2 1/2 feet long. Works perfect for tight areas and its supper light so I can carry it all day and it takes up very little room.

Carbon Fiber gopro pole

As you can see the gopro pole is very compact and light weight. I carry this with me on almost all of my outdoor outings where I’ll be shooting video or taking still pictures.

You can see the gopro mount that I’m using makes it very easy to move the camera around to get better angles. I will also mount the camera upside doing so helps alleviate shaking and makes for much less distorted video or stills images.

As you can see from the image on the left this particular mount can be used in many different ways. I really like this mount combined with the carbon fiber gopro pole mount. Really works well for what I mainly use it for.

I have another longer carbon fiber handle that is approximatley 5ft in length. I use this pole when I’m trying to stand a bit farther away from the subject I’m shooting with the camera. It works really well when I’m shooting out of a boat trying to capture action video and also trying to stay out of the way. Also helps make really great video when a fish is coming into the net and you use this longer carbon fiber pole to put the camera right up next to the fish. I’ll have to post some a couple quick video clips of this kind of action. If you are a fisherman, you would really dig it I think.

I’ll try to get some pictures up of the longer gopro pole I use later this week. I will try to capture several different angles so you can see exactly how I have y camera mounted on the longer gopro pole.
